4.0 out of 5 stars with 161 reviews
Culled from a three-night stand at London's Alexandra Palace in September 1974, Volume 7 gives a pretty accurate account of the breadth of the Grateful Dead's repertoire. In the early '70s, their playing had become more focused and succinct in some spots and more adventurous in others. Keyboardist Keith Godcheaux, who'd joined the band to augment an ailing Pigpen in 1972, was a fully integrated and important member at this point, using sophisticated jazz chords that added depth to the material.

DIck's Picks was the DEAD's archivist favorite shows. He had to make them commercially available for the heads, and DICK THANKS FOR MAKING EM SOUND SO GOOD!! General consensus points to 1977 as being a particularly rewarding year in the Dead's performance history. Certainly, their musical blend was at its most dynamic--funk, folk, jazz, blues, psychedelia, and even disco seem perfectly balanced and wrapped in rock urgency--and the actual sonic mix was at its clearest and most organic (thanks

4.4 out of 5 stars with 60 reviews
Audio CD This three-disc set combines a second-set segment from a June 1974 show in Providence, Rhode Island, with the complete second set of a Boston Garden appearance recorded two nights later. The band was clearly in a playful mood that week, adding new twists to old songs and coming up with a number of dynamite jams out of thin air. Bassist Phil Lesh is particularly frisky and fertile on the Providence material. The collection begins with a distinctive ''China Cat Sunflower'' taken at an
