Britten: War Requiem; Sinfonia da Requiem; Ballad of Heroes
4.3 out of 5 stars with 245 reviews
CD While not quite the equal of Britten's own performance, Richard Hickox's version is so good that it's pointless to quibble about this or that detail. It also has two big advantages over the composer's own recording: stunning digital sound and two spectacularly performed couplings that are related in subject and mood to the main work. In fact, if you have room for only one Britten disc in you collection, this should be it. You get a comprehensive overview of the issues that concerned this

Arthur Rubinstein's 1941 Grieg Concerto, the first, and possibly best of his four recorded versions, is poorly transferred here, a problem one hopes will be corrected for BMG's upcoming complete Rubinstein edition. The pianist strikes a good balance between sensitivity and unbridled energy in a nicely contrasted set of Grieg's Lyric pieces and the underrated G Minor Ballade, which benefit from (relatively) superior engineering. --Jed Distler.

Emmanuel Ax plays Chopin Ballades and Sonata no.2
mpn: 1, ean: 8718247711895,
4.7 out of 5 stars with 205 reviews
Chopin's Second Sonata and four ballades, heroic and original in nature, are among his greatest works. A richly comprehensive pianist, Emanuel Ax has a grandeur, ease, and naturalness that make him a consummate musician. His aristocratic playing shines in these great works..
Liszt: Piano Recital

An index to the excellence of Leif Ove Andsnes's Liszt recital is that he makes familiar works exciting and fresh-sounding and obscure ones persuasive and accessible. Andsnes turns the ''Mephisto'' Waltz No. 1 from a tired circus stunt into a tone poem daring in its effrontery and voluptuous in its lyricism. He plays the ''Dante'' Sonata without the usual penny-awful bludgeoning and sentimental blustering and lifts its treatment of love, chaos, and redemption to an exalted level. The

Chopin is rightly credited with the invention of the ballade asa musical form, and his Ballades inspired Liszt and Brahms, among others, to explore this form and compose ballades of theirown. The ballade was one of the favorite idioms of 19th-centuryRomantic poetry, and Chopin s Ballades are among the finest, most original, and most enduring works to capture the essenceof the Romantic aesthetic..
Danny Boy: Songs and Dancing Ballads by Percy Grainger

Grainger was one of music's true originals. Folk-song collector, bandmaster, composer of quirkily original orchestral and choral music, his works have yet to be fully appreciated--or even cataloged. The problem was that he liked to keep his performance options open, and generally produced several versions of the same piece, some of which were complete rewrites (and therefore new works), while others were modest rescorings. The choral music largely consists of folk tune and popular song

The Chopin Collection: The Ballades / The Scherzos
4.4 out of 5 stars with 150 reviews
We usually think of Chopin as the creator of exquisite miniatures: all those lovely preludes, mazurkas, and waltzes. But Chopin also has a bolder, visionary aspect, heard in the piano sonatas and in these eight exciting pieces. Whether or not the Ballades were actually written to express the content of narrative poems (a subject still debated by musicologists), they tell exciting stories. And the scherzos--Chopin uses that term to denote the contrasting content of each piece, not humorous
